Development of Novel Ablative and Contact Head Materials for use in Electrical Circuit Breakers

The objective of the program is to develop and design materials for use as ablatives and contact heads in low and medium range electrical circuit breakers. Polymeric and polymer-matrix composite materials are being investigated for use as ablatives, while silver-based metal matrix composites are explored for use as contact heads. Materials downselection is based on theoretical models for properties desired of the materials for their respective applications, and systematic experiments are being conducted off-line and in-situ in breakers to understand the relative performance of the various candidate materials. Based on the investigations, optimal materials with tailored compositions and properties are developed for use in actual applications.
